A company has stopped selling computer equipment to focus on consulting. Its website describes the current offer correctly, but a directory listing still calls it a reseller. A buyer reading the listing may contact the business to order equipment.
This is a fictional example. It shows why an updated service page cannot resolve every contradiction published elsewhere. An AI answer linking to the old listing also gives you a specific page to examine.
Start with a specific error
When you find an incorrect description in an AI answer, save the answer and open the links offered as sources. Compare the stated service, area served and contact information with the company’s current details.
The link may reveal the error’s source, but do not assume it does. A displayed page may support a different part of the answer. If no document contains the incorrect information, record that you have not found its cause.
For our fictional business, the useful task would be to correct the reseller listing. Creating more listings elsewhere would leave that description in circulation.
Identify who controls each page
The appropriate action depends on who publishes the information:
| Page concerned | Possible action |
|---|---|
| A listing your business can edit | Update services and contact details, then check the published version. |
| A directory managed by another organization | Send a factual request with the listing address, correction and current public source. |
| An independently written article | Report the error and supply information the editor can verify. |
| A publication sponsored by your company | Check the agreed terms and make the funding visible. |
| A customer review | Examine the described experience and respond within the platform’s rules. |
An editor retains control of the analysis. Asking to correct a discontinued service is different from demanding a recommendation or first place in a ranking.
Keep the earlier text and the correction date. You can then see whether the incorrect description recurs in later checks. Updating a listing does not guarantee an immediate change in an assistant’s answer.
Choose publications that serve your customers
After correcting factual errors, consider where an explanation of your work would help. A professional association may suit a specialized service. A software comparison may reach relevant buyers. A local listing mainly helps people find practical business information.
Choose a publication because its readers need information you can provide. Prepare a specific subject, verifiable documents and someone able to answer questions. A list of hundreds of directories does not tell you which ones your customers use.
Also examine where a claim originates. Five sites repeating one press release do not represent five independent investigations. A customer account, technical documentation and a journalist’s analysis supply different information.
Treat paid content and reviews according to what they are
Sponsorship can buy an agreed placement or distribution. It cannot guarantee an AI recommendation. Ask what is included: format, duration, documented audience and disclosure of the commercial relationship.
For advertising links, Google recommends the technical sponsored label; nofollow remains acceptable. Your web provider or the publisher can apply it. Its purpose is to identify the nature of the link to Google. Google documentation
Reviews should describe real experiences. Google Maps prohibits paid or incentivized reviews and selectively requesting positive ones. Customers must be free to choose their wording and rating. Google Maps policy
If several customers describe the same misunderstanding, also examine the service or its presentation. Replying to reviews does not replace correcting the reported problem.
Participate where you can answer a real question
In a professional community, explain your connection to the business when it matters to understanding your contribution. Follow the group’s rules and answer the question asked. A useful explanation can stand without a link to your website.
For example, in a software-change discussion, you might explain which documents to prepare before requesting a quote. You need to be able to support the advice, without inventing customer experience to make it sound persuasive.
To begin this week, choose one incorrect description you have actually observed. Find who can edit it, prepare the accurate information and check the published correction. That task has a clear completion point, even while its effect on AI answers remains to be observed.

Responses expire after 90 days. They are not published or used as sales enquiries. A daily pseudonymous network identifier expires after 24 hours to limit abuse. Expired records are deleted by an hourly cleanup. The feedback database does not store your IP address; hosting security logs may still process it.
This browser stores only a receipt and your rating until the response expires, to reduce accidental duplicates. It does not store your comment or editing key. You can update a response during this page visit; after leaving, it becomes read-only in this browser.
